Karoline Leavitt is preparing to leave her position as White House press secretary, but her departure will not take her far from President Donald Trump’s political operation.
Leavitt confirmed that she plans to return to MAGA Inc., the pro-Trump super PAC where she previously worked, after leaving the White House. She made the disclosure to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Aug. 21, while traveling with Trump to a political rally in South Carolina.
The move means Leavitt will remain involved in Trump’s political efforts even after stepping away from one of the most visible jobs in the administration.
Leavitt will return to MAGA Inc.
Leavitt previously worked for MAGA Inc. before joining Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. She later became Trump’s national press secretary during the campaign before being selected as White House press secretary after his return to office.
Her return to the super PAC represents a continuation of a political relationship that has developed over several years.
Although Leavitt confirmed that she will work with MAGA Inc. again, she has not publicly disclosed her exact title or detailed responsibilities. Reports indicate that she will take some time away before returning to political work in September.
Trump had already outlined her future role
Trump announced Leavitt’s White House departure on Aug. 12, saying she would leave at the end of August to spend more time with her young family.
At the same time, Trump made clear that he wanted Leavitt to remain part of his political circle. He described her as one of his top outside advisers and said she would remain an influential voice within the Republican Party as Republicans prepare for the 2026 midterm elections.
Her move to MAGA Inc. therefore appears consistent with Trump's earlier announcement. Rather than ending her political career, Leavitt is shifting from an official government position to an outside political role.
Family considerations behind her departure
Leavitt, 28, recently returned to the White House after maternity leave following the birth of her second child, a daughter named Viviana, in May.
She said the decision to leave was difficult because of the demands of the press secretary position. The job requires constant travel, preparation for press briefings, coordination with administration officials and frequent interaction with the president and reporters.
Leavitt said she wanted to spend more time with her children while also acknowledging that she would miss the position.
Her decision makes her departure unusual because she is leaving one of the highest-profile communications positions in Washington while remaining active in national Republican politics.
A major change for the White House press operation
Leavitt's exit will also create a significant change inside the White House communications team.
