LOS ANGELES — A bitter Democratic runoff debate between Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman has left some voters frustrated and questioning whether either candidate offered a convincing vision for the city's future.
The two Democrats are competing in a runoff for mayor after a campaign that has increasingly focused on sharp ideological differences, personal attacks and the city's persistent problems with homelessness, crime, affordability and public safety.
But after their latest debate, some Los Angeles residents who spoke with Fox News Digital said they were disappointed by what they saw on stage. One voter went so far as to say she wished both candidates could lose.
Debate turns increasingly personal
Bass and Raman traded pointed attacks during the debate, creating an atmosphere that some viewers described as more combative than substantive.
Instead of focusing exclusively on policy proposals, the candidates repeatedly challenged each other's records and judgment.
The confrontational tone appeared to frustrate voters who wanted detailed answers about how the next mayor would address Los Angeles' most pressing problems.
Stacey Segarra Bohlinger, one of the residents interviewed by Fox News Digital, criticized both candidates and said she considered them “both bad,” expressing the unusual sentiment that she wished the two candidates could both lose.
Her reaction illustrated the broader frustration among some voters who feel trapped between two candidates they do not find particularly appealing.
Bass defends her record
Bass, the incumbent mayor, entered the debate with the advantage of governing experience but also the burden of defending her record.
Since taking office, Bass has faced intense scrutiny over homelessness, public safety and the city's response to major emergencies.
