Actress Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, died at the age of 36 in South Carolina, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her sudden death. Her death was confirmed by her family through her representative, while authorities continue to examine what happened.
The Greenville Police Department has indicated that the preliminary investigation has not found signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. That finding is significant because it narrows the direction of the investigation, although it does not establish an official cause or manner of death. Authorities have not yet publicly released a final determination.
Emergency call brought police and medical crews
According to reports, emergency responders were called to a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon after Panettiere was found unresponsive. Police and emergency medical personnel responded at approximately 1:50 p.m. local time.
Dispatch information reported by multiple outlets described the situation as involving an unresponsive woman and cardiac arrest. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR and advanced cardiac life support, but Panettiere could not be revived. She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 2:32 p.m., according to reporting based on emergency-response information.
The identity of the person who made the emergency call has not been definitively established in all reports. Authorities have said an acquaintance was involved in reporting the emergency.
Reports of possible overdose remain unconfirmed
One of the most important developments in the early investigation involves emergency dispatch information that reportedly referenced a possible overdose. However, that information should not be treated as a confirmed cause of death.
Reports based on dispatch audio say emergency personnel discussed an overdose and cardiac arrest while responding to the scene. Such dispatch information reflects what was being reported or considered during an emergency response; it does not replace an autopsy, toxicology testing or an official determination by the coroner.
For that reason, authorities have not officially announced that Panettiere died from an overdose. The precise cause and manner of death remain matters for investigators and the coroner to determine.
Investigation remains open
Although police have reportedly found no evidence of foul play, the investigation has not been closed. Investigators and the Greenville County Coroner's Office are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Panettiere's death and determine whether medical, toxicological or other evidence can establish what caused her death.
An autopsy and related testing are particularly important in cases where a person dies unexpectedly and the cause is not immediately apparent. Toxicology results, medical history and other evidence can take time to process, meaning the first police assessment may differ from the final official conclusion.
At this stage, therefore, the most accurate description is that Panettiere's death is under investigation, with no preliminary indication of foul play.
A career that began in childhood
Panettiere began working as an actress when she was a child and eventually became one of television's recognizable young stars. She gained widespread attention as Claire Bennet on NBC's Heroes, where she played a teenager with extraordinary regenerative abilities.
She later starred as Juliette Barnes on Nashville, a role that showcased both her acting and singing abilities and earned her two Golden Globe nominations. Her film credits included Remember the Titans and appearances in the Scream franchise.
Her death comes at a particularly significant point in her public life. Earlier in 2026, Panettiere released the memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she discussed difficult experiences involving fame, motherhood, addiction and personal loss.
Family and Hollywood mourn her loss
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, as well as her parents. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28 from heart-related complications.
News of her death has prompted tributes from actors, former colleagues and other figures in the entertainment industry. Many have remembered Panettiere not only for her best-known television roles but also for her career as a performer who began working in the industry at a very young age.
For now, investigators have provided one important preliminary conclusion: there is no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances. But the central question—what caused Hayden Panettiere's death at 36—has not yet been definitively answered. Further findings from the coroner and investigative testing will be needed before an official cause and manner of death can be established.
