Sophie Cunningham Answers Toronto Boos With Big Game

TORONTO, Aug. 19, 2026: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham delivered her response on the basketball court after being loudly booed by fans during the team's 101-95 victory over the Toronto Tempo at Scotiabank Arena.

Cunningham faced a hostile reception throughout Tuesday night's game, with sections of the Toronto crowd booing whenever she entered the game or touched the basketball. The reaction came amid an ongoing controversy surrounding her public comments about transgender athletes competing in women's sports.

Rather than allowing the atmosphere to affect her performance, Cunningham responded by making the most of her opportunities from beyond the arc. She attempted three three-point shots and converted all three, helping Indiana secure its fifth consecutive victory.

The boos began when Cunningham checked into the contest and continued at various points throughout the night. She was also met with a loud reaction when she stepped to the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and again while leaving the court after the final buzzer.

The controversy surrounding Cunningham dates back to an ESPN interview in July, when she said WNBA players should not have to compete against what she described as “biological men.” Her comments ignited a wider debate about transgender participation in women's sports and turned the Fever guard into one of the league's most polarizing players.

The Toronto crowd made its position clear. Some spectators displayed transgender pride flags and signs supporting transgender athletes, including messages opposing Cunningham's position. At the same time, supporters of Cunningham gathered outside the arena before the game, demonstrating how sharply divided the public reaction has become.

Yet Cunningham appeared unwilling to turn the postgame conversation into another political confrontation.

When asked about the boos, she initially joked that the reaction might have been connected to her recent social-media post about trying Canadian ketchup chips with teammates Caitlin Clark and Lexie Hull. The lighthearted response offered a glimpse into how she was attempting to handle the intense attention surrounding her.

Cunningham then praised the Toronto crowd rather than attacking it.

“I think we’ve had so much fun,” she said after the game, emphasizing that it was her first time visiting Canada. She described the crowd as “absolutely amazing” and said that boos and cheers are part of sports.

That response was significant because Cunningham has previously indicated that she wants the focus to return to basketball rather than remain centered on the controversy. Her performance in Toronto provided an opportunity to do exactly that.

The Fever's victory was also important from a competitive standpoint. Indiana improved its winning streak to five games, while Cunningham's perfect three-for-three performance from three-point range gave the team valuable scoring contributions in a difficult road environment.

The Toronto game nevertheless demonstrated how Cunningham's comments have moved beyond a simple sports debate. The opposing demonstrations, signs and chants showed that her position has become a flashpoint in the WNBA's continuing discussion about gender, women's sports and inclusion.

For Cunningham, however, the clearest response came during the game itself. Faced with repeated boos, she continued playing, knocked down every three-pointer she attempted and helped the Fever leave Toronto with a victory.

Her message was therefore delivered without another lengthy argument: let the basketball do the talking.
