Former ESPN broadcaster Cindy Brunson is facing renewed criticism over her recent commentary about Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, with critics accusing the veteran WNBA broadcaster of applying different standards when evaluating players.
The controversy intensified after Clark delivered a standout performance against the Chicago Sky, scoring 37 points and recording 10 assists as Indiana secured a 113-90 victory. Clark shot 13-of-24 from the field and connected on 8-of-12 attempts from three-point range.
Rather than focusing on Clark's scoring efficiency and playmaking, Brunson questioned the significance of the performance because Indiana held a large lead late in the game.
In a post on Threads, Brunson characterized Clark's production as "stat padding" and compared it unfavorably with Paige Bueckers' 32-point performance for the Dallas Wings. Brunson highlighted that Bueckers reached her total in 26 minutes, while suggesting Clark benefited from playing with Indiana comfortably ahead.
Brunson later deleted the post, saying the reaction had generated comments she described as racist and transphobic. The episode nevertheless continued to fuel debate among WNBA fans about whether Clark receives unusually harsh treatment from sections of the basketball media.
Clark's Historic Numbers Add to Debate
The criticism came at a particularly notable moment in Clark's career.
According to reports, her latest performance marked the fifth time she has recorded at least 30 points and 10 assists in a WNBA game. That total puts her ahead of the rest of WNBA history combined in that statistical category, with all other players collectively accounting for four such performances.
Brunson subsequently characterized Clark's accomplishment as a "small sample size," another comment that drew criticism from people who argued that the achievement was already historically significant despite Clark having played fewer than three full WNBA seasons.

The dispute also comes amid Brunson's earlier comments concerning Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham and Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington.
Brunson criticized the decision to eject Carrington following a physical incident involving Cunningham and said Carrington should have received a Flagrant 1 rather than an ejection. She also publicly described herself as being firmly supportive of Carrington.
Those remarks became part of the wider debate after Brunson subsequently criticized Clark, another Fever player.
