Florida Republican gubernatorial nominee Byron Donalds pushed back against comedian Bill Maher after Maher suggested that race may have played a role in Donalds’ performance in several Florida counties during the Republican primary.
The exchange took place Friday on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” where the two discussed Donalds’ decisive victory and his path toward the 2026 Florida governor’s race.
Maher Raises Questions About Panhandle Vote
Maher pointed to Donalds’ losses in several rural counties across Florida’s Panhandle, an area with a predominantly White Republican electorate.
Maher described the results as notable given Donalds’ status as a Black Republican candidate. He also said he would welcome the possibility of Florida electing its first Black Republican governor, while arguing that the country has not completely moved beyond racial considerations.
The comments prompted Donalds to offer a different explanation for the county-level results.
Donalds Points to Crowded Primary
Donalds emphasized that the Republican contest featured 11 candidates, creating a race in which different contenders attracted support from different parts of the state.
Rather than attributing his losses in particular counties to racial bias, Donalds argued that his overall statewide performance demonstrated broad Republican support.
He said he finished the primary with 48% of the vote, describing roughly 800,000 votes as a significant step toward securing the nomination.
‘Florida Is a Meritocracy’
Donalds directly rejected the suggestion that racism explained his weaker performance in certain areas.
He argued that Florida has increasingly become a place where candidates are judged on their qualifications, political positions and ability to represent voters.
“Florida is a meritocracy,” Donalds said, arguing that voters should focus on the candidate with the strongest views, skills and ability to represent the state.
His response offered a sharp contrast to Maher’s interpretation of the primary results and reflected Donalds’ broader argument that his campaign should be judged by its statewide performance rather than individual county outcomes.
Donalds Moves Toward General Election
Donalds’ Republican primary victory puts him in position to compete for the Florida governorship in November.
The primary result also gives him an opportunity to broaden his appeal beyond the Republican voters who supported him during the nomination contest. His campaign is likely to face continued scrutiny over how he performs in different regions and among different groups of Florida voters.
The exchange with Maher highlighted a larger political debate over race, representation and how voters evaluate candidates. While Maher raised the possibility that racial attitudes influenced some county results, Donalds maintained that the primary demonstrated voters were making choices based primarily on political preferences and candidate qualifications.
With the general election approaching, Donalds will now have to turn his primary victory into a statewide campaign while continuing to make the case that his candidacy represents a politics focused on performance and policy rather than race.
