Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar's campaign for Minnesota governor is facing a fresh challenge from Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth, who is questioning Klobuchar's record on combating the state's sprawling fraud scandals.
The criticism comes as Klobuchar makes fighting fraud a central theme of her campaign to succeed Gov. Tim Walz. Klobuchar has promised an audit on her first day in office and pledged to "root out waste fraud and abuse." But her Republican opponent argues that the senator's recent emphasis on the issue conflicts with her public record during the years when Minnesota's fraud problems were emerging.
A review of more than 1,000 releases
Fox News Digital reviewed more than 1,000 official press releases issued by Klobuchar's Senate office between Jan. 1, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2025.
The review found that none directly addressed the Feeding Our Future scandal or specifically proposed solutions to Minnesota's broader social-services fraud crisis. The review also found no releases using terms including "Minnesota fraud," "Medicaid fraud," "autism fraud," "DHS fraud" or "nonprofit fraud."
That record has given Republicans an opening to argue that Klobuchar is making fraud a political priority only now that she is running for governor.
Demuth, who is Klobuchar's Republican opponent, questioned why the senator did not make the issue a more prominent part of her work while serving in Washington.
"My question is, where were you for the last 10 years, but absolutely the last eight years?" Demuth told Fox News Digital.
Feeding Our Future became a national scandal
The controversy traces back to the Feeding Our Future case, a massive fraud investigation that became public in January 2022.
The original scandal involved roughly $250 million in alleged fraud connected to a federally funded child-nutrition program. Prosecutors have since described Minnesota's wider social-services fraud problem as potentially involving billions of dollars.
The issue has become increasingly important in Minnesota politics because Republicans have argued that state officials failed to respond adequately to warning signs.
Walz, who has been governor since 2019, announced in January that he would not seek reelection. His administration has faced intense criticism over oversight failures connected to fraud allegations.
Klobuchar's candidacy has therefore placed her in a difficult political position: she is seeking to present herself as a candidate capable of confronting the problem while Republicans are attempting to connect her to the Democratic establishment that governed Minnesota during the years when the scandals emerged.
Klobuchar now makes fraud a campaign priority
Klobuchar has sought to address the issue directly during her gubernatorial campaign.
Earlier this month, she released a campaign advertisement promising that she would order a state audit immediately upon taking office and focus on eliminating waste and fraud.
"It’s time for results, not excuses," Klobuchar said in a campaign message.
Republicans, however, say the timing of that message is precisely the problem.
Demuth argues that Minnesotans should judge candidates not simply by what they promise during an election but by what they did before seeking higher office.
"Who are Minnesotans gonna trust for their next governor?" Demuth said. "Somebody that has just decided to talk about fraud now that they're running for office or someone that has been fighting fraud this entire time?"
Demuth highlights her legislative record
Demuth has attempted to contrast her record with Klobuchar's.
She became Minnesota House speaker in 2025 and says she made fraud prevention and oversight a major legislative priority. Her efforts included establishing the Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee.
Demuth argues that her work demonstrates a longer-standing focus on protecting taxpayer money.
"Billions of our tax dollars stolen," Demuth posted on X while promoting her own anti-fraud agenda.
The Republican candidate is now trying to make that contrast central to the gubernatorial contest.
The Walz connection becomes another issue
Klobuchar also faces questions about her relationship with Walz.
Demuth pointed to previous praise Klobuchar had given the governor, including describing him as an "exceptional governor" and a "great governor."
That history could become politically significant because Republicans are seeking to tie Klobuchar to the Democratic leadership responsible for overseeing Minnesota government during the period in which the fraud scandals expanded.
Demuth argued that Klobuchar could have used her position as a senior senator to push for congressional hearings or greater scrutiny.
"She could have held hearings," Demuth said, adding that Klobuchar also did not attend a Minnesota hearing on fraud held several months ago.
Klobuchar's campaign was contacted by Fox News Digital for comment, but the report did not include a response.
A potentially difficult issue for Democrats
The fraud controversy could prove particularly challenging for Democrats because it goes beyond a single criminal case.
The scandal has raised broader questions about state oversight, government accountability and how taxpayer-funded programs are monitored.
Republicans are attempting to turn those questions into a referendum on the Democratic administration that has governed Minnesota for years.
For Klobuchar, the challenge is to convince voters that her campaign promises represent a genuine shift toward tougher oversight rather than a response to the political consequences of the scandal.
The senator has spent nearly two decades in the U.S. Senate, giving Republicans a long record to examine as they argue that she had opportunities to raise the issue before launching her campaign for governor.
The November contest takes shape
Klobuchar emerged from the Democratic primary and is heading toward the general election as Democrats seek to retain control of the governor's mansion.
Her Republican opponents are betting that the fraud issue can reshape the political landscape by shifting the campaign away from traditional Democratic-versus-Republican debates and toward questions about competence and accountability.
For Demuth, the message is straightforward: voters should compare Klobuchar's current promises with her past record.
For Klobuchar, the campaign will likely continue emphasizing her proposed audit and plans to strengthen government oversight.
The central question now is whether Minnesota voters will view her as the candidate best positioned to clean up the state's fraud problems — or whether Republicans will successfully persuade them that she should have been fighting the problem much earlier.
