WASHINGTON — The Washington Mystics continued their impressive late-season surge Friday night, holding off the Atlanta Dream 79-74 to extend their winning streak to six games.
Washington fell behind early, with Atlanta controlling the opening 2 minutes and 31 seconds. The Mystics then seized control with a 13-0 run and never surrendered the lead, although the Dream made the closing minutes far more competitive.
Shakira Austin was at the heart of Washington’s performance. She finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds while adding five blocked shots, helping the Mystics withstand Atlanta’s attempts to regain control.
The Mystics also received valuable contributions throughout the lineup. Kiki Iriafen scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded five assists, while Sonia Citron added 14 points. Cotie McMahon chipped in 11 points, and Lauren Betts provided a strong presence on the boards with 11 rebounds off the bench.
Defense proved especially important for Washington. The Mystics recorded 12 blocks, setting a franchise record, and held Atlanta to only 46 points through the first three quarters. That defensive effort created enough separation for Washington to withstand the Dream’s fourth-quarter push.
Atlanta was led by Allisha Gray, who scored a game-high 26 points. The Dream, however, struggled from long range, with Gray making only two of nine attempts from three-point territory.
The victory moves Washington to 18-12 and gives the Mystics their longest winning streak since their 2019 championship season. The six-game run has transformed the team’s momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch.
For the Mystics, Friday’s result was another example of their ability to make winning plays on both ends of the floor. They built an early cushion, defended the rim effectively and then held their nerve when Atlanta mounted its late challenge.
Washington will now look to keep the momentum going as it continues its push toward the postseason.
