ASHBURN, Va. — Stefon Diggs is back where his football journey began, and the veteran wide receiver is embracing the opportunity to represent his hometown.
The Washington Commanders signed Diggs to a one-year contract worth up to $12 million, bringing the four-time Pro Bowl receiver back to the Washington area after more than a decade away. Diggs, a Gaithersburg, Maryland, native who played his college football at Maryland, described the move as a full-circle moment.
At his introductory news conference, Diggs made clear that this opportunity means more than simply joining another NFL team. He wants to play for the community that watched him develop as a young athlete.
“I want to put on for my city,” Diggs said, emphasizing his desire to make an impact both on and off the field.
The 32-year-old receiver enters Washington with considerable experience and a strong résumé. Diggs spent his first several NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before establishing himself as one of the league's premier receivers with the Buffalo Bills. He has also played for the Houston Texans and New England Patriots.
Last season with New England, Diggs caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, showing he can still be a productive target despite being well into his NFL career.
Now, Diggs will join a Commanders offense featuring quarterback Jayden Daniels and veteran receiver Terry McLaurin. Washington hopes his experience, route-running ability and competitive personality can give the passing game another dangerous option.
Diggs also has a personal connection to the area that makes the move particularly meaningful. He grew up in the Washington region and attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School before playing at the University of Maryland.
For Washington Coach Dan Quinn, however, Diggs' value extends beyond his production. Quinn has praised the veteran's competitiveness and leadership while emphasizing the energy he can bring to the receiver group.
Diggs has also made an immediate impression at training camp. After his first practice, he stayed late to work with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and other teammates, a sign that he intends to contribute beyond catching passes.
The return home gives Diggs another opportunity to prove he remains among the NFL's top receivers. He has accumulated more than 11,500 receiving yards during his career and is approaching the 1,000-catch milestone.
For the Commanders, the signing represents a major addition to an offense looking for a rebound season. For Diggs, it is a chance to play in front of the fans and community that helped shape his career.
After years of playing away from home, Diggs now has a chance to make his next chapter one of the most personal of his career.
