WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals finally had something to celebrate at home Friday night.
After a difficult road trip and a turbulent period around the trade deadline, the Nationals returned to Nationals Park and delivered a much-needed 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The win was only Washington’s second in its last 10 games, giving the club a welcome boost after a frustrating stretch.
Daylen Lile provided the biggest offensive blow early in the game. After Cincinnati shortstop Elly De La Cruz committed an error, Lile launched a three-run homer to give Washington an immediate advantage.
The Reds answered with three solo home runs, with Eugenio Suárez, Matt McLain and De La Cruz each going deep. That power display briefly brought Cincinnati level, but Washington responded before the visitors could take control.
Harry Ford delivered the decisive swing in the fourth inning. After Lile doubled, Ford followed with a two-run home run, putting the Nationals back in front 5-3. The two homers accounted for all of Washington's runs.
Cade Cavalli also played an important role in protecting the lead. The Washington starter worked through six-plus innings, striking out eight while allowing the Reds' three runs.
Cincinnati threatened again in the seventh, but a key defensive play by Nationals shortstop Nasim Núñez helped stop the rally and preserve Washington's advantage. Clayton Beeter then closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning for his 12th save.
For Washington, the victory was about more than one game. The Nationals had endured a rough road stretch and significant roster changes around the trade deadline, making a positive result in front of their home crowd especially valuable.
The Reds, meanwhile, saw their recent momentum interrupted. Cincinnati had been playing well since the All-Star break, but its inability to turn three solo homers into additional offense proved costly.
Washington will look to build on the victory as the series continues at home. For a team searching for consistency, Friday's combination of timely hitting, solid starting pitching and late defensive execution offered a welcome reminder of what the Nationals can accomplish when those elements come together.
