NANTUCKET, Massachusetts — September 3, 2026 — Nearly seven decades after the luxury ocean liner Andrea Doria disappeared beneath the North Atlantic, the legendary wreck continues to attract experienced divers seeking history, artifacts and the ultimate underwater challenge.
But the ship that earned the nickname “Mount Everest of shipwrecks” is changing rapidly.
Resting roughly 240 feet beneath the Atlantic about 50 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts, the Andrea Doria is deteriorating as its steel structure collapses and sections of the vessel break away. For divers who have spent decades exploring its remains, the transformation is both fascinating and unsettling: the wreck is becoming harder to navigate even as time is running out to see it.
The wreck's deterioration is not merely cosmetic. Collapsing decks, loose metal, fishing lines, nets and debris have created additional hazards in an environment where divers already have limited time and visibility.
Why the Andrea Doria Became a Diving Legend
The Andrea Doria was one of Italy's most celebrated passenger liners when it entered service in the 1950s.
The ship represented postwar Italian luxury, featuring elegant public spaces and artwork. It was designed for transatlantic travel between Europe and the United States and had completed more than 100 crossings before its final voyage.
Its fate changed on July 25, 1956.
While traveling toward New York, the Andrea Doria encountered dense fog south of Nantucket. At the same time, the Swedish liner Stockholm was approaching from the opposite direction.
Both ships detected one another by radar, but their crews developed different interpretations of the vessels' courses. When the ships finally saw each other through the fog, there was too little time to avoid a collision.
The Stockholm struck the Andrea Doria on the starboard side with enormous force.
The collision killed 51 people: 46 passengers aboard the Italian liner and five crew members aboard the Stockholm. The Andrea Doria remained afloat for almost 11 hours before finally sinking beneath the Atlantic.
That long interval gave rescuers time to evacuate many of those aboard, turning what could have been an even greater maritime disaster into a remarkable rescue operation.
The Wreck Became a Treasure Hunt
The sinking did not end public fascination with the Andrea Doria.
Instead, the wreck became a magnet for underwater explorers.
Divers quickly discovered that the liner was accessible using scuba equipment, unlike much deeper wrecks that require specialized submersibles. But accessibility proved deceptive.
The wreck lies at a depth where ordinary recreational diving is not appropriate. Divers must contend with cold water, strong currents, limited visibility and strict decompression requirements.

Retired U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport told Fox News that even highly experienced divers have faced serious challenges at the wreck. He described it as the “Mount Everest” of dives because of its combination of difficulty and danger.
Why Experienced Divers Still Take the Risk
For many divers, the attraction goes beyond adventure.
The Andrea Doria is effectively a submerged time capsule.
Every expedition can reveal objects connected to the ship's final voyage and its earlier life as a luxury liner. Divers have recovered porcelain, personal belongings, pieces of the ship and other artifacts over the decades.
Among the most notable discoveries was a life-size bronze statue of Admiral Andrea Doria, the ship's namesake.
Another expedition recovered the vessel's three-ton safe in 1981. Hopes that it would contain a spectacular fortune proved exaggerated, but the recovery became another chapter in the wreck's extraordinary history.
The objects matter because they provide tangible connections to a ship that otherwise exists primarily in photographs, historical accounts and the memories of survivors.
The Ocean Is Slowly Destroying the Ship
The biggest threat to the Andrea Doria today may no longer be simply the depth.
It is time.
Decades underwater have transformed the wreck.
Researchers and divers have documented substantial structural deterioration. Sections of the hull have weakened, decks have collapsed and parts of the bow and stern have broken away. Earlier mapping efforts also showed that the wreck had changed considerably over relatively short periods.
John Moyer, a longtime explorer who has made more than 100 dives to the wreck, previously described the vessel as decaying and falling apart.
The ship's steel structure is gradually collapsing under the combined effects of corrosion, currents and physical forces on the seabed.
As structural supports disappear, other portions of the wreck lose their stability.
The result is a cycle of deterioration: one collapsed section can put additional stress on neighboring structures, accelerating the transformation of the wreck.
Falling Steel Creates New Underwater Dangers
For divers, deterioration creates a particularly dangerous paradox.
A collapsing wreck can reveal previously inaccessible rooms and objects.
But the same collapse can make those areas deadly.

Eighteen Divers Have Lost Their Lives

People have actually died attempting to explore it.
Fox News reported that 18 divers have lost their lives while exploring the Andrea Doria. The 1990s were particularly deadly, with eight divers dying between 1992 and 1999.
Those deaths illustrate why the wreck occupies such a unique position in technical diving.
It is not simply deep.
It combines depth with currents, cold water, poor visibility, entanglement hazards, decompression concerns and an unstable artificial environment.
Divers also face a finite amount of useful bottom time.
Every additional minute spent exploring can increase the complexity of the return journey and decompression obligation.

One of the most striking aspects of the wreck's deterioration is how dramatically its appearance has changed.
When early explorers reached the Andrea Doria, much of the liner remained recognizable.

Technology is giving researchers another way to study the Andrea Doria.
Submersibles and advanced sonar systems have allowed explorers to document sections of the wreck without requiring divers to enter every dangerous area.
Earlier mapping expeditions produced two-dimensional and three-dimensional sonar information, helping researchers understand how the vessel is changing.
These surveys can serve several purposes.
They can help identify unstable areas, document the wreck's condition and create a historical record that survives even after portions of the physical ship disappear.
In that sense, digital mapping may eventually become one of the most important ways to preserve the Andrea Doria.
Why the Wreck May Not Last Forever
Shipwrecks do not remain frozen in time.
Once a steel vessel reaches the seabed, corrosion begins changing its structure. Ocean currents continually interact with the wreck and surrounding sediment. Fishing activity and other physical forces can also contribute to damage.
Eventually, a large steel ship can become little more than scattered sections of metal resting on the seafloor.
The Andrea Doria appears to be moving along that path.
Experts previously comparing its deterioration to a collapsing cave warned that once a structure loses its supporting framework, deterioration can accelerate rapidly.
That makes today's images and dives especially valuable.
Future generations may not be able to explore the same rooms or recognize the same features that current divers encounter.
A Race Between Exploration and Decay
The story of the Andrea Doria has therefore entered a new chapter.
For decades, the central question was whether divers could reach the wreck and safely explore it.
Now another question is becoming equally important:
How long will the wreck remain explorable at all?
The answer is impossible to predict precisely.
The ocean does not follow a timetable, and structural collapse can accelerate unexpectedly. A section that appears stable during one expedition can be dramatically different years later.

As the wreck slowly disappears, each recovered artifact, photograph, sonar scan and carefully documented dive preserves another fragment of the liner's story.
The Andrea Doria may eventually collapse beyond recognition.
Until then, divers will continue descending into the cold Atlantic — knowing that they are not merely visiting a famous wreck, but exploring a piece of history that the ocean is steadily taking back.
